I used a reel mower sharpening kit but it didn't work. What did I do wrong?
I followed the instructons but the blades were still dull. I must have missed something. I don't grasp the concept of how this is supposed to work.
The kit consists of a handle to spin the blades for ten minutes and some compound. Do I need to make an adjustment so the blades touch the cutter bar?. I'm pretty stupid about mechanical things.
You didn't do anything wrong as you are not accustomed to sharpening devices like that. Knives are one thing but a reel mower may have to be put on a machine to be sharpened.
Unlike lawnmower blades which have to have a balance check after sharpening and can be done by hand; the reel mower blades are not exposed as well.
In order to sharpen a reel mower correctly......best advice is take it to someone who sharpens lawn mower blades/reel mower blades. Take your kit along with the mower and ask the person to show you what to do while you demonstrate how you have sharpened it. While your there have the person sharpen your reel blade as a jesture that you appreciate the input.
With a sharp blade and the knowhow to do it correctly.....your blade should stay sharp for a long time.......I have a dumb question.....did you take the reel off and put it on backwards?
